YFAMD: Young Filipino-American Modern Dancers
YFAMD (pronounced Y-FAM the
D is silent) originated in the summer of 2005 to unite veteran Filipino folk dancers
from several different organizations around Hampton Roads, a medium in which to
create strictly original hip hop choreography. Any dance style that was not traditional
was considered 'modern' by many aunties and uncles. Since its conception, YFAMD
has opened for various celebrity performers, made multiple media appearances, and
created community events raising funds for the likes of the Philippine Cultural
Center and its volunteers. Our very first President was Erbin Baradi followed by
Luisa Benito. Erman Baradi who is our current President, has been YFAMD President
for 5 years now. A renowned 757 competitive dance crew, YFAMD has gone on to win
local competitions and represent Virginia from coast to coast to compete and network
among the most established of dance crews. YFAMD is founded on the principles of
Community, Culture, and Competition and always makes time to give back. YFAMD was
the past winners of GMA’s Pinoy TV Dance Showdown’s Online Voting Competition then
became the First Runner–Up in the dance competition. We provide a 'KUYA' and 'ATE'
outlet for the youth. A big brother and big sister program.
Since working and becoming a member of The Council of the United Filipino Organizations
we have started holding activities for the youth such as The Mr. Pogi Pageant, dance
workshops and talent shows. We have brought Filipino artists such as Jr. Aquino,
Kat Badar, Jeff Bernat, and Erika David.
